Who you will be working with
Our growing BVI office is currently made up of one Partner, one Associate and one Executive Assistant and is part of the wider Baker & Partners Group.
What you will be doing
You will deliver straightforward, objective, and independent advice to our clients whilst working on a broad range of commercial litigation and insolvency matters.
Key responsibilities
- Providing a consistently excellent level of service to the Firm’s clients.
- Being a significant point of contact in your area of expertise for a range of clients whilst establishing what needs to be done to solve the client’s problem.
- Producing first-class legal opinions on complex areas of law.
- Producing and implementing clear plans for how the client’s aims can be lawfully and successfully achieved.
- Managing files with minimal Partner input.
- Effectively researching and effectively taking notes and recording clear instructions
- Taking responsibility for draft skeleton arguments, pleadings, proofs of evidence, chronologies, dramatis personae, witness statements and correspondence.
- Drafting court documents such as fixed date claim forms, applications, affidavits, schedule of costs, court orders and other documents as required.
- Proof reading and finalising written submissions, witness statements, appeal applications and other documents as required.
- Appropriately and effectively delegating tasks to more junior members of the team whilst providing support and guidance on the task in hand.
- Coaching and mentoring more junior members of the team as well as new joiners as and when required.
- Developing and maintaining good client relationships, gaining client confidence and that of other professionals.
- Being strategically and commercially aware, contributing to appropriate business development activities of the Firm to include article writing, attending appropriate networking opportunities, presenting at briefings and legal conferences, attending conferences and social media posting.
- Ensuring you and your direct reports record all chargeable time and achieve a minimum number of chargeable hours per calendar month, in line with the Firm’s policy.
Qualifications, experience & expertise
- Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 8+ years of post-qualified experience.
- Excellent academic background, educated to degree level. Preferably obtaining a 2:1 or above.
- Ambitious and commercially driven.
- Experience within a relevant law firm environment, demonstrating good consistent performance.
- Solid legal skills with an appropriate understanding of relevant market and client industries and technical knowledge of the relevant law.
- Excellent written, verbal and drafting skills.
- Polished presentation skills.
- Displays excellent attention to detail.
- Able to remain calm and manage work loads under pressure.
- Demonstrates a flexible approach to work.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism in all dealings.
- Able to deal sympathetically and appropriately with internal and external clients.
- Ability to work within a collaborative environment, a team player who is willing to support others.
- A self starter who can demonstrate high levels of initiative and motivation.
- Ability to manage problems without heavy reliance on a Partner, driving the tempo of a case.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications.
